How to Clean Engine Parts?
A recommended ultrasonic cleaning solution is elma tec clean A4 concentrate, an alkaline formulation for metal, glass, ceramics, plastic and rubber. It removes oil, grease, combustion residues, soot and other organic contaminants when diluted to 2 to 5% with water.
Here is an example of a cleaning cycle using the Elmasonic E Plus ultrasonic cleaner:
Add water to the tank fill line and the required amount of elma tec clean A4 to make a 5% concentration. (A 2.5 liter container of concentrate dilutes to approximately 9 gallons of solution.)
Turn on the cleaner and allow it to operate for approximately 20 minutes. This degassing step drives off entrapped air and must be taken each time fresh cleaning solution is prepared.
Prior to cleaning set the thermostat to 70˚C and turn the unit on. While the solution warms place parts in the mesh cleaning basket in such a way that they do not come in contact with each other.
Lower the basket into the cleaning solution, place the lid on the tank to conserve heat and reduce noise, and set the timer for 40 minutes. Cleaning time depends on the condition of the parts and can be adjusted either way.
At the end of the cycle remove the component(s) from the bath. If they need further cleaning run them through another cycle. Do not reach into the hot cleaning solution. Instead remove the basket if you want to inspect or rearrange the parts.
Allow the parts to flash dry before reassembly.
If rust is a concern add 0.05 to 0.5% elma-KS to the cleaning solution. This provides a protective coating on a molecular level for temporary corrosion protection.
